Biodiversity reflects the magic of nature. Biodiversity is the foundation of life for all of us; without this diversity of life, the possibility of life on Earth will be severely limited in the long run.
Working to promote biodiversity on farms is not an end in itself; it is work that benefits society by ensuring the vitality of the farm and the quality of the food that farmers produce.
By creating ecosystems, farmers are establishing islands that will serve as a “Noah’s Ark” for future generations. By fostering diversity on their farms, they are preparing themselves to cope with climate change.
At our latitude, we feel the effects of climate change through long periods of drought and heavy rainfall. This results in erosion caused by large volumes of water. If your soil has a mix of shallow and deep roots, you’re well-prepared. If you have diverse plant growth, your cows’ milk will be high in unsaturated fatty acids—especially conjugated linoleic acid, which helps prevent many lifestyle-related diseases.
As you can see, biodiversity isn’t just important for our well-being, our spirit, and the beauty of the world; it also paves the way for a bright future for you and your children, because this diversity increases the chances that plants and animals will be able to adapt to climate change.
Biodiversity ensures your farm's long-term viability and is a source of pride for you.
I will never forget the pride of the farmer who walked with me through his meadows, where 70 or 80 different grasses and herbs grew. Never before had I felt the farmers’ pride so intensely, and the fact that he was proud was good—very good—for the community, his farm, and the food he got from his animals.
His pride was the kind that made him happy—and makes us all happy.
Sincerely, Werner Lampert
