Contributing to the preservation of the regions

Dominik Panzer, Project Management Sustainability at LAMPERT

The sustainability model assesses the three pillars of sustainability (economic, social and natural) and their interaction in a region. This allows regional sustainable development and resilience to be recorded. A comparison is made with a typical, conventional value chain for the respective product group in Austria.

Calculation of added value for the region

The added value for the region is calculated by the independent research institute FiBL, which has been recognized worldwide as the leading research institute for organic agriculture since 1973.

FiBL Austria has been evaluating Zurück zum Ursprung products since 2009. It started with a CO₂ footprint. In the meantime, the entire sustainability is considered using 41 indicators along the entire value chain - from agricultural production to trade. The model assesses sustainability potential on a scale of 0 to 100%, with 100% representing full target achievement.

The following subject areas are evaluated for target achievement:

  • Workforce and jobs
  • Sales structure
  • Profit stability
  • Investment orders
  • Process quality
  • Networking
  • Communication
  • Freedom of choice
  • Knowledge transfer
  • Company culture
  • Further training
  • Diversity
  • Animal welfare
  • Water, soil and air quality
  • Species and habitat diversity
  • Regional cycle closure

A stable income, social cohesion and promising future prospects are crucial for the quality of life and attractiveness of a region.

The transparent presentation of the "added value for the region" directly on the product pages shows exactly how Zurück zum Ursprung contributes to strengthening the regions. In many cases, this added value, which is created along the value chain, significantly exceeds the values of conventional production chains.
