Innovative project to reduce greenhouse gases and adapt to climate change on farms.
Greenhouse gas reduction at the plant
As part of the "Agriculture of the Future" project of HOFER Austria's own organic brand Zurück zum Ursprung, we are embarking on a journey towards climate neutrality together with participating farmers. The aim is to actively reduce greenhouse gases and sequester carbon directly on the farm as much as possible in order to offset unavoidable emissions - entirely without the purchase of offset certificates.
I am delighted that the project is making the sustainable contributions of organic farmers visible and that I can support them on their way to climate-friendly, sustainable farming.

The project involves 80 organic farms in the hay milk and vegetable sectors. Farmers, scientists and retailers are working together to develop feasible measures such as sophisticated pasture management and the use of self-produced biochar. The success of the project is tracked using a specially developed climate impact tool.
Climate-friendly farms
At the same time, numerous measures support adaptation to climate change, such as optimized irrigation, climate-friendly forest management, promotion of soil fertility and humus retention and build-up. Humus-rich soil is more resistant to heavy rainfall or drought and can, for example, absorb water more quickly and store it for longer.
The measures are implemented in the following four impact areas:
- Reduction of emissions from animal husbandry
- Energy source
- Securing carbon reservoirs
- Creation of a sink effect
The project at BIOFACH 2025
Products on the market
The "Agriculture of the Future" products have been available at HOFER Austria since July 1, 2024.
They come from 35 hay milk farms from the Mühlviertel region, 15 hay milk farms from the Murtal and Murau regions, 15 from Tyrol and around 15 vegetable farms from the Neusiedlersee, Pannonia, Waldviertel and Weinviertel regions.
