Assessment

Scientific assessment of the sustainability of agricultural production and manufacture of a foodstuff.

Sustainability assessment by the CSCP

This methodology can be used to assess the sustainability of food. It was developed in collaboration with the Collaborating Center on Sustainable Consumption and Production (CSCP), a non-profit think and do tank based in Wuppertal, Germany, and a scientific advisory board.

Isabell Riedl, Head of Sustainability at LAMPERT

Approach

To this end, 12 relevant topics were identified that play a role in the sustainability assessment of agricultural production and food manufacturing. Nineteen international assessment and reporting methods and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations were used and evaluated.

The 12 sustainability topics and their sub-topics:

  • Husbandry and species-appropriate feeding
  • Diversity of species and ecosystems
  • Diversity of farm animals
    and plants
  • Climate emissions
    Inputs
  • Climate emissions
    Agriculture
  • Climate emissions Processing and logistics
  • Water withdrawal
  • Water quality
  • Husbandry and species-appropriate feeding
  • Soil fertility
  • Loss of soil
  • Circular
    Material flows
  • High-quality
    recycling and food losses
  • Regional networks, culture and resilience
  • Transparency regarding origin
  • Transparency and quality of sustainability communication
  • Fairness for producers
  • Employee rights
  • Technical process quality and recipe
  • Product purity
  • Sustainability pioneer and sustainable nutrition
  • Sustainability of the packaging

Over 80 meaningful indicators were defined for each sub-topic by the scientific advisory board. The calculation is fed by scientific studies and reports (e.g. from the Thünen Institute, WWF, BMEL and many more), organic standards (from Prüf Nach!, the organic associations, legal requirements), representative shopping baskets (CSCP), databases for life cycle analyses (e.g. Ecoinvent database for the packaging sector) and primary data from Prüf Nach!

The value determined via a weighting then reflects the sustainability of the product in the respective topic.

The Scientific Advisory Board

The Scientific Advisory Board was set up to establish the assessment method for the sustainability of agricultural products. The advisory board is made up of 7 experts from independent institutions, educational establishments and foundations. With their knowledge, they cover the entire range of sustainability topics relating to agriculture and food production.
